Karen Rainer Campbell
As a mom who raised two girls in Appalachia and who has lived in the region for over thirty years, I have deep roots in this community. Now, as a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Elementary teacher in Hendersonville, NC, I have seen firsthand how students can grow, academically and emotionally, through art and outdoors with nature. My love for these mountains combined with my love for my students has inspired my vision for Appalachia Rising: to create joyful, healing, and imaginative spaces where children can explore, express, and grow—especially in times of hardship.
Rainey Campbell
The art seen here is original by Rainey Campbell, Karen's daughter. Rainey is a rising senior at UNC Chapel Hill where she studies Environmental Science.
"I was born and raised in Asheville, and this place will always be home. Growing up, I played in the mountains, hugged the trees, and rolled in the grass with our family dog. These experiences have nurtured my soul in ways words can't fully capture. Through my art, I hope to give back to this beautiful mountain community that has given me so much, supporting my mom and the organizations dedicated to preserving its strength and spirit."
